Is coaching worthwhile?

You may want to equip yourself with skill and tact to surf your way through the small and big tides of life.

Is coaching worth your time & money?

Taking up coaching in my view is an investment of time and money. Like any investment decision, you might want to consider the returns, rewards and alternatives before you make a choice.

Here are some key items, I believe will help you to understand and make better choices for yourself.

The coaching landscape and dynamics have changed in the last decade and continue to change every year.

With the regular influx of newly trained and certified coaches, coaching services are now more affordable than before.

Affordability does not mean it is cheap. To justify the spend of your hard-earned money and valuable time, you may want to see improved results that has a positive impact in your life.

And I believe sustainable results come when there is a realisation within the individual that breaks through the barriers which blocks them.

An open mind, a safe space to share and the right questions encourages insights and realisation.

3 key considerations

to get your money's worth

Here are some pointers that may help you get an idea and see if coaching could be your money’s worth.

1) What are you struggling with?

Most people that I know, struggle with some issue or the other. The intensity of the battle varies vastly based on the issue at hand, their awareness level, and how they approach the challenge.

Most of the time, we see and deal with the challenge at the surface level. We might not see the underlying element that feeds a behaviour pattern that might make you feel stuck.

Coaching helps shed light on hidden elements and brings awareness to the client. Some specific insights and realisations may emerge that effectively breaks old patterns to feel unstuck!

Being specific about the outcome from a single session and overall for an agreed number of sessions is really important to measure the value of coaching.

As coaching delves deeper, it can help you address your issues faster than you would probably be able to figure out yourself. Comparing the benefits (quantitative and qualitative) of intented progress against the cost of the sessions might give you an idea of whether it is worth investing your precious time and money.

2) Is coaching the most effective way to address your issues?

You probably want to find the most effective way to support you in dealing with your challenges. Depending on your objective and how you want to move forward, you could effectively get support through these methods:

  • consulting
  • training
  • mentoring
  • therapy
  • coaching

Very often many of these terms are used interchangebly that could be misleading. Each of these methods are effective in its own way. Each of them has a different approach and outcome.

Based on how these are delivered, the costs also varies across these methods. The more accessible or familiar method does not necessarily mean that it is the most effective.

Read along to gain a better understanding of each method. Hopefully, you find them useful to choose the most effective method suited for your need.

When will therapy benefit you more than coaching?

Coaching is all about moving forward and does not delve into the past.  Coaching focusses on finding the right way to move forward with your dreams, goals and aspirations. It also helps to visualise challenges along the way and how to handle these effectively. When you have huge obstacles in your path, arising from past wounding, you might not be able to realise the full benefits of coaching without healing yourself from the significant experiences.

We all have diverse experiences in life, and we get affected by some more than others. You may have faced negative experiences in the past that has left you traumatised, leading to intense emotional suffering. Trauma, in my view, is best understood by looking at what you went through and, more importantly, how deeply it affected you in that moment.

We usually process these events and recover from them in our own time. When you notice your emotions are pulled and pushed beyond your capacity to manage them, or find it difficult to perform your daily functions without a rational cause, you might want to consider healing techniques such as therapy.

Getting additional help might help you recover faster from negative experiences that cast a shadow over your real-self. It does take time and energy to heal completely and the duration varies from person to person. Therapy could be an effective way to revisit your past and heal your wounds. It helps you resolve your own emotional wounds in the past to find a better balance of emotions for your present life.

3) How does coaching help you?

Coaching focuses on the whole person who is dealing with the situation, rather than the situation alone.

Coach is the expert in the coaching process and the client is the expert in the situation they are dealing with.

Coaching encourages objectivity and enables the client to come up with the optimal solution for the challenge they are dealing with.

Coaching supports the person to shift perspectives and enable deep learning about themselves and create sustainable results in the long term.

Coaching could benefit you, if you relate to any of these:

  • You are struggling with issues and believe there are better ways to respond much easier and quicker and not sure where to start.
  • You want customised methods and solutions that are sustainable and aligned to your values.
  • You know what your issue is and also how to resolve them. You even help others find their way out of their problems. Yet, you find it difficult to adopt them yourself.
  • You are interested in constantly developing yourself for the next exciting opportunity and want to find the best way to move forward.
  • You want to build awareness about yourself and find optimal ways to make the right decisions.
